Our enthusiast reader ask a question about home remodeling. I just bought a 1932 adobe home, I would like to change some of the doors and windows but my husband thinks the walls can’t be structually changed or they will cave in. I just want to expand the doorways, and windows. Can I do it? Any tips
Hi Wendee Byrd, In my humble opinion, with my experiences in home remodeling… here is my best answer.
The big trick is finding a way to support the walls above the windows while you remove and replace the existing header. You will of course have to make the new header long enough to reach well past the new window.
The header is usually a large log or beam that runs across above the window. It hold up the walls and the roof above it.
I wouldn’t recommend this sort of project for anyone but the most experienced DIYer.
