A visitor need help to answer a question about What are some subtle ways to show patriotism in decorating your home?. We have a visitor coming to our home who recently returned from military deployment in Afghanistan. We’d like to add a couple decorations to our home to show our patriotism, but without going over the top. Of course, the obvious answer is to display the American flag. Any other ideas? We want him to have a warm, welcome feeling in our home.
I’ll try to answer your question…
Hi Tim,
The answer as you say is obvious to display the American Flag, but also you might consider purchasing a reproduction Antique American Flag. I would also suggest a large sizeable figure of the American Eagle to display on a Desk or Fireplace Mantel. Displaying a framed reproduction of the Constitution another thought
) Add some scented candles in your home of warm woodsy / vanilla notes for the senses as well .

Everyone is different, but most military guys I know don’t really care about that stuff too much.
My husband actually really dislikes it (US Army) because it doesn’t actually DO anything. If I really wanted to humiliate him, I’d have make a welcome home sign and put it on our front door when he returned from deployment a couple of weeks ago, LOL! Every person is different.
I think most military members would just like a heartfelt thank you. Rather than showing off things that don’t really do anything, maybe set up a “thank you” dinner and invite some friends, or take him out for an activity and pay as a “thank you”… that kind of thing. An action of thanks.
Welcoming a veteran of war into your home is a great action of thanks!
A good way might be to just temporarily add an area rugs to a room that features red, white and/or blue like one from http://www.bororug.com or buy an American flag throw pillow to add to the couch. These are things you can easily take away or if find you like them, leave them.
